- Three mistakes I see on almost every rejected order
Type “cosentino marble” into a search bar and you'll get a thousand pictures of white kitchens. Type “cosentino showroom NYC” and you'll get directions. Neither will tell you whether the slab you're about to buy actually matches the slab you approved. That's the gap I work in: I'm a quality compliance manager at a surfacing distributor, and I review every order before it goes to fabrication. Roughly 200 projects a year, and yes, I've rejected my share.
This checklist is for anyone speccing Cosentino products—Silestone, Dekton, or Sensa—whether you're an architect, a contractor, or a homeowner doing a kitchen remodel. It assumes you haven't bought yet. Run these six checks in order and you'll avoid the most expensive version of “I didn't know.”
1. Know which product line you're actually speccing
Cosentino is the parent brand. The materials are Silestone, Dekton, and Sensa. You'd be surprised how often I see specs that mix them up. It's tempting to think “Cosentino” is one thing—but each line behaves differently:
- Silestone is quartz—about 90% natural quartz bound with resins and pigments. It's the go-to for kitchen countertops and bathroom vanities.
- Dekton is an ultra-compact surface made from a blend of porcelain, quartz, and glass, sintered at extreme heat. It handles thermal shock better, so it's often used for outdoor kitchens and big-format slabs.
- Sensa is granite with a stain-resistant treatment.
The “cosentino marble” search term gets a lot of traffic, but none of these are marble. If you want the marble look, Silestone's veined designs come closest. If you want the maintenance behavior of marble, well—Silestone resists etching from lemon juice and wine in a way marble never will. That's the whole point of it. But it's not indestructible, and that brings me to the rest of the list.
2. Look at a full slab, not just a sample
Showroom samples are three inches square, maybe twelve. A slab is 120 by 55 inches. The scale changes everything. When I compared a Silestone sample chip and the full slab side by side for a client last year, I finally understood why people keep telling me the sample “looked nothing like the slab.” The sample was a uniform soft grey. The slab had a bold, dark veining pattern that dominated the surface. Same product name. Same color code. Just a much wider view of the material.
Ask to see a full slab, or at least a piece you can hold at arm's length under decent light. If you're ordering online and only have a sample, factor that into your risk. Some colors are consistent enough that it doesn't matter. The heavily veined ones are where the surprises live.
3. Check batch and lot numbers before fabrication
Quartz starts as a block. One block produces many slabs, and adjacent slabs from the same block are the ones that match each other for veining continuity. If your project needs two or three slabs—say, for a large island with a waterfall edge—ask whether they're from the same block. If the fabricator pulls from two different blocks, the color can be close. But “close” is the word you'll hear yourself repeating when the seam catches the light.
In our Q1 2024 quality audit, we rejected 12 slabs before fabrication. Three of them failed because they came from a different block than the approved sample, and the color difference was noticeable to everyone in the room. (Should mention: we caught the mismatch in a second round—only after photo verification—which is exactly why we now require batch verification for every multi-slab order.)
Color matching in manufactured surfaces follows a logic similar to the Pantone system used in print: a Delta E under 2 is considered an acceptable match, and anything above that starts to become visible. You don't need to know Delta E—you just need to ask “are these slabs from the same block?” and see them side by side before you sign off.
4. Inspect the edge profile and finish on real samples
Polished, honed, suede, leathered—each finish reflects light differently and hides fingerprints differently. This is also where poor fabrication shows up. A polish that looks fine on a small sample can look wavy on a long straight edge.
Run your hand along the edge of a sample in the showroom. Do it before you specify. If you're looking at a mitred edge for a waterfall island, ask to see a mitre sample—not just a straight-edge profile. I learned that one the hard way. We once approved an order based on a single-edge profile photo, and the mitred corners came back from polishing looking visibly rounded. (Not that we let them ship—but it cost a week and a re-polish.)
5. Confirm who fabricates and who installs
The slab is raw material. The countertop is the finished product. The gap between them is the fabricator and installer—and that's where most quality issues actually happen. Cosentino's warranty exists, but its enforcement often depends on using certified fabricators and installers. Verify that for your region. At least, that's been my experience with every warranty dispute I've seen.
Don't assume your GC's usual fabricator has worked with Dekton or ultra-compact surfaces before. They cut differently than granite or standard quartz, and the tools matter. Ask directly: “Have you fabricated Dekton with a mitred edge? Can I see an installed project?” The upside of checking was that we avoided a bad install. The risk of not checking? I kept running the numbers: saving maybe $1,800 with an uncertified fabricator versus potentially eating a $6,000 redo if a seam failed or voids the warranty. It wasn't worth it.

I've watched people change their mind within thirty seconds of seeing their oak cabinet sample sit next to a veined Silestone. That's the whole point: you don't want to discover the mismatch after the stone is cut.
Three mistakes I see on almost every rejected order
Ordering from a sample alone
It's tempting to think a three-inch sample represents the whole slab. It doesn't. The more movement a design has, the more the sample lies.
Treating “quartz” as indestructible
Silestone resists most kitchen acids, but it can chip on impact and it isn't heat-proof the way Dekton is. Set a hot pan straight from the stove on either of them enough times and you may end up with a thermal shock mark. The “what do you mean it's damaged?” conversation is my least favorite part of this job.
Skipping the seam plan
Every large kitchen with an island has seams somewhere. Where the seam lands, how the grain aligns, whether it's mitred or butt-jointed—that's the difference between “you can't see the seam” and “I see it every morning.” Ask for a seam plan before fabrication, not after the slabs are cut.
None of this is about being paranoid. It's about the fact that an informed customer asks better questions and gets a better result. I'd rather spend ten minutes walking you through the slab yard than process a return later. (Note to self: this would be a good video.)
