Cosentino Stone Systems: A Quality Inspector's Pre-Installation Checklist

I review every countertop, shower pan, and wet wall before it ships—roughly 350 installations a year. I've rejected about 11% of first deliveries in the last 12 months. The frustrating part is that nearly every rejection was preventable.

This is not a design guide. It's the checklist I use when a Cosentino order is about to go into production. Use it at the contract stage, not at installation. If you're a designer, a fabricator, or a contractor who has typed 'cosentino waterfall granite' into a search bar because a client demanded it, you're the person I wrote this for.

When This Checklist Applies

Use this for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, shower panels, shower pans, and any project that includes Cosentino stone systems—the umbrella for Silestone, Dekton, Sensa, plus the sinks and waste systems you can coordinate with the same finish.

The 7-Point Pre-Installation Checklist

1. Write down the product line, color code, and finish

Silestone is engineered quartz. Dekton is an ultracompact surface. Sensa is granite with a protective treatment. They are not interchangeable in fabrication, and they are not all installed the same way.

Clients think a photo is enough. 'Something like milk glass' is a feeling, not a spec. Milk glass—soft, white, slightly milky—usually points to one of the white quartz colors with a suede or polished finish. But I need the color code and the finish before I'll put it on a cutting schedule.

Same color, different finish: polished reflects light and shows fingerprints; suede hides prints but may require different care. That choice belongs in the contract, not in a conversation.

2. Look at the physical slab, not the rendering

Take pictures, but don't approve from pictures alone. Go to the warehouse and look at the actual slab. A slab that looks white in the showroom can have a green or gray undertone next to your paint or cabinet.

Check for fissures, hard spots, and veining that is too aggressive. If it's a bookmatch, mark the slab order: A/B and which side faces up. Record the slab ID, take photos, and attach it to the work order.

This step takes 15 minutes. It has saved me from scheduling a re-mill on an $11,000 order more than once.

3. Confirm the edge detail before the CNC file is built

You'd think the edge profile is a drawing detail. But a standard polished edge is not the same as a mitred stacked edge, and not every edge can be achieved on every thickness.

Here's the thing: for Dekton, the minimum edge radius is different from Silestone. Cosentino's installation guidelines specify the radius for each thickness. If you don't have those pages, download them before you send the file to the machine.

Write the edge profile out in words. 'Eased' is not 'beveled.' A 45-degree mitre with a 1mm flat at the corner is a specific geometry. If you leave it vague, the fabricator will choose the cheapest one.

4. Plan the waterfall detail like it's a separate project

Waterfall is a fabrication detail, not a material. When someone asks for 'cosentino waterfall granite,' they usually mean a countertop that drops vertically to the floor. The same slab must be used for the top and the side panel so the grain continues around the corner. You cannot change slabs after the order.

Check the maximum slab length. A typical Cosentino slab will allow an eight-foot island, but a full-height waterfall panel can eat up length in a way most people don't expect. Measure the island and the floor-to-top distance before cutting.

Then choose the corner geometry: a 45-degree mitre looks cleaner but is more delicate; a butt joint is more forgiving but exposes the edge material. I went back and forth on this with a client for two weeks. On paper, butt joints were cheaper and safer. But they wanted the continuous stone look around the corner, so we went with the mitre. That was the right call, but only because we planned it.

5. Check the shower components and the moisture plan

If the project includes a shower tray, check the slope and the drain position before approving. A channel drain in the wrong position means a cut through the pan or a custom pan, both of which are expensive.

Also, and I can't stress this enough: a stone panel is not a deodorant. I once had a client who searched for 'salt and stone deodorant' while discussing a bathroom remodel and expected a new Silestone wall to fix the bathroom smell. The smell was not the wall. It was a leaky drain trap and missing sealant. We fixed the moisture issue first, then installed the stone. No surface will fix ventilation or drainage.

6. Get a line-item cost, because 'how much does a door cost' is the wrong question

People look for cost benchmarks they recognize. 'How much does a door cost?' is one of those questions. A hollow-core interior door in my area is roughly $120–$250 installed; a solid wood or fire-rated door can be triple that. Same idea with a countertop: the answer depends on the slab, edge, cutouts, installation, and accessories.

Your quote should separate slab cost, fabrication, edge build-up, cutouts, sink mounting, delivery, and installation. On a Cosentino project, I've seen a base quote double when the waterfall mitre, drain channel, and solid-surface sink were added as line items after the fact.

As of early 2025 in the Midwest market, typical installed ranges for us are: Silestone $85–$150 per square foot, Dekton $130–$250 per square foot, and Sensa granite $80–$180 per square foot. A waterfall island at the higher end can easily land at $9,000–$18,000. That's not a price anchor for every city—but it's why line items matter.

7. Record warranty, lot numbers, and maintenance steps

Cosentino publishes a warranty for each brand. You can void part of it if you use an unapproved sealer or skip the expansion joint between the tile and the shower pan. The maintenance card is different for Silestone, Dekton, and Sensa. Don't assume they are the same.

Keep the lot numbers and the slab ID in the project file. If there is a future claim, you'll need them.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mixing finish codes in the same project—a polished main top with a suede side panel will look wrong at the corner.
  • Assuming quartz needs sealing. Silestone is nonporous; it doesn't need a sealing routine. Dekton hasn't been sealed in any project I've reviewed. Sensa granite is treated at the plant. Check the care card.
  • Forgetting the expansion gap between the shower tray and wall panels. Silestone moves a little; the gap has to exist.
  • Ordering a waterfall without checking slab length. This is the most expensive mistake on the list.
  • Letting the aesthetic lead the material choice before knowing the fabrication constraints.

Why I Keep Using This Checklist

The most frustrating part of my job is watching the same problems show up in different orders. Written specs help, but they don't prevent everything. What changed for us was requiring a checklist before the CNC file got approved. It's not brilliant; it's just consistent.

There is something satisfying about a waterfall mitre that lines up perfectly. That doesn't happen by luck. It happens because somebody checked the grain direction, the slab ID, and the edge radius before the saw moved.

This approach worked for us, but we're a mid-size fabricator with mostly predictable kitchen and residential bathroom projects. If you're doing a commercial high-rise façade or a curved Dekton panel, the calculus changes. Use this as a starting point, and always read Cosentino's own technical documentation before you commit to a cutting schedule.

Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. That's the whole checklist.
