If you’re specifying Cosentino surfaces—whether it’s Silestone, Dekton, or Sensa—for a project and need to make sure the install is right the first time, this is your checklist. I’ve been on both sides: as a quality/compliance manager for a large-scale fabrication shop, I review every slab, cut, and seam before it leaves our facility. The veining pattern was off, and the client rejected it on sight.
Check this: Match the batch number on the slab sticker against the purchase order. Don’t rely on color name alone. Differences in resin content or pressing can change appearance subtly, but painfully.
Step 2: Confirm Thickness and Edge Profile Against the Drawing
Standard Dekton and Silestone slab thicknesses are 1.2cm, 2cm, and 3cm (or 1/2", 3/4", and 1-1/4"). But the drawing might call for a 3cm beveled edge, and the fabricator might order 2cm stock to save weight. Or worse, the edge profile detail isn’t specified at all, and the fabricator uses their 'standard' (a simple eased edge), which doesn’t match the modern, square-profile look you intended.
Check this: Pull the detailed elevation or section drawing. Mark the exact edge profile (e.g., 'pencil round,' 'bullnose,' 'waterfall miter') and cross-reference with the material order. Cost of getting this wrong? A $3,000 slab that needs to be re-cut.

Step 3: Inspect for Hidden Substrate Issues
Cosentino slabs come with a resin backing to prevent moisture absorption. But during shipping or handling, that backing can get damaged. I’ve seen slabs arrive with hairline cracks in the backing layer that weren’t visible from the top. Installed over a seam? That crack will eventually become a visible line, especially with darker colors like Cosentino's Nero Marquina.
The check: Before cutting, backlight the slab. Place a bright light behind it in a dark room. Any flaws in the resin or substrate will appear as shadows or lines. If you see any, document it and send it back.
Step 4: Test the Underlayment Support
This is a step most people overlook. Even a premium material like Dekton can crack if it’s not properly supported. The substrate (usually plywood or particle board) needs to be perfectly flat and level. An uneven floor can create stress points. We had a $10,000 kitchen project fail because the contractor didn't level the cabinets before installing the Silestone top. The countertop cracked within a month.
Your checklist here: Use a 6-foot level on the subfloor and the cabinet tops. Any gap over 1/8" is a red flag. Don’t proceed until it’s fixed.
Step 5: Verify Seam Placement (Before Glue Touches Slab)
Fabricators love to hide seams, but sometimes the best seam location is the most obvious one. I had a project where the kitchen island was 10 feet long, and the spec called for a single slab (Dekton, 1.2cm). Because of the size, the fabricator wanted a seam in the middle. The designer wanted it off-center. Nobody checked before the glue set.
Check this: Dry-lay both pieces. Mark the seam line in pencil. Have the designer or client sign off on the exact location before any adhesive touches. A misaligned seam can ruin the visual flow of a large island.
Step 6: Check for 'Solar' Sensitivity (Dekton Specific)
This is a niche one, but it matters. Dekton, especially darker colors, can reach very high temperatures when exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods. This isn't a defect—it's a property of the material. But if your installation is near a large south-facing window or a glass door, the slab can expand and cause stress at the seam or edge.
The fix: If the surface will get direct sunlight for more than an hour a day, specify a gap (1/8" to 1/4") at the wall or backsplash to allow for thermal movement. Seal it with a flexible silicone caulk, not a rigid grout.
Step 7: Document the Warranty Requirements
Cosentino offers a 25-year limited warranty for Silestone and Dekton when manufactured and installed according to their specifications. But the warranty is void if you skip certain steps: proper sealing (for Silestone) or using non-recommended cutting tools (which can chip the edges).
Final check: Before the fabricator cuts a single slab, have them send you their installation method statement. Match it against the Cosentino warranty document. If their process says something different (like using a wet saw with a contaminated blade), flag it. The cost of a replacement slab could be $1,500—and that’s on you if the warranty is voided.
Avoiding the Most Common (and Costly) Mistake
The single biggest error I see? Assuming that because it’s a premium brand, you can skip the inspection. Cosentino's consistency is excellent (their QC is top tier), but the supply chain is where mistakes happen. A slab from a different batch can have a slightly different shade.
One more thing: If you’re using Cosentino sinks or shower pans (like their Silestone Vanity), apply the same checklist. Check the thickness of the sink rim against the cutout. We once received a sink that was 1cm thicker than the spec—it didn’t fit the countertop cutout. Cost me a rush order and a lot of sleep.
