Common Mistakes That Still Happen
I cut my first Cosentino Dekton countertop in 2016. I also ruined my first Cosentino Dekton countertop in 2016. Same slab.
We'd measured the kitchen, sent the template to the workshop, everything looked good on paper. Then we realized the customer's sink was actually wider than the spec sheet, and we carved out a gap that was off by an inch. That mistake cost $1,100 in labor, not including the fresh material or the awkward phone call.
Over the last 8 years, I've managed just over 200 countertop installations for contractors and high-end residential clients. I created this checklist after my third costly screw-up, and it has saved my team from repeating those mistakes. Yes, it's mainly about Cosentino Dekton, but the principles apply to most stone and sintered surfaces.
If you're a fabricator, installer, or general contractor about to handle a Dekton project, this is the sequence I use before every single cut. No theory. Just steps.

Step 1: Verify the Actual Slab Arrival
You can't trust the invoice or the photo. When the slab arrives, verify the batch number and the exact color. I once received a "Calcutta" that was actually a different pattern. The supplier's system showed the right code; the warehouse grabbed the wrong batch. We didn't catch it until the first cut. That became a coffee table.
Before you cut, put your eyes on the slab. Compare it to the sample. If it's not the exact batch the sample came from, there may be subtle vein differences. Get confirmation in writing.
Step 2: Check the Substrate and Levelness of Cabinet Bases
In 2020, I had a beautiful kitchen installation fail because the island appeared level from the front, but the back corner was off by a quarter-inch. Six months later, the homeowner noticed a hairline crack. The crack started at a pressure point, not the stone itself.
Before any fabrication, use a laser level and check the cabinet bases at multiple points. Shim anything that flexes. This prevents stress fractures later.
Step 3: Confirm Supports and Overhangs (Not Just on Paper)
Dekton is extremely hard, but it's not indestructible. Overhangs depend on the slab thickness and the base structure. In 2021, I saw a 12mm slab installed over a 10-inch unsupported overhang. It eventually snapped clean at the support line—fortunately, it happened during the night, not while somebody was leaning on it.
Check the specs and overhang limits from the manufacturer. If in doubt, add support or switch to a thicker slab. It's a boring fix, but it beats a dramatic failure.
Step 4: Check the Actual Sink and Faucet (Twice)
My 2016 disaster happened because I measured the sink on the plan, not the sink in the box. Sink models get changed or upgraded by the supplier without anyone telling you. I measure the physical unit every time—the width, the height, and the rough-in details—before I cut the opening.
Also, verify the faucet holes against the actual faucet base. Some modern faucets come with a wide 3-hole plate. Nothing looks worse than a custom stone countertop pockmarked with useless holes.
Step 5: Inspect the Edge Profile Before Machining
The edge may seem like a minor detail, but it's the part your client sees daily. In the shop, it's easy to program a different profile than what's on the drawing. I've had a "beveled" piece come out as a full bullnose, and neither was what the architect asked for.
Always confirm the edge profile with the physical drawing. After machining, inspect it under daylight, not just fluorescent shop lights. Polishing quality issues are much easier to fix before they leave the shop.
Step 6: Mock Up the Seam and Vein Matching
If your job has two slabs meeting at a corner or a long run, the seam must be dry-fitted before any adhesive touches it. I lay the pieces side by side, adjust the seam and the vein flow, and mark them clearly. The slabs are then numbered so the install crew doesn't mix them up. Believe me, the trucking company won't care about your seam order. Number them before they leave the warehouse.
Step 7: Walk the Jobsite Before the Final Cut
This is the step I never skip. The walls might have changed, drywall might have been replaced, or the appliance might have been swapped. Verify the actual dimensions at the jobsite before you cut. If the distance between the back wall and the cabinet front is off by even 1/16th of an inch, stop and reassess. It's better to look like a perfectionist than to be the one explaining why the countertop doesn't fit tomorrow.
Common Mistakes That Still Happen
Even with a perfect checklist, I see people fall into a few traps.
Over-promising durability. Dekton handles heat and scratches well, but nobody should call it indestructible. If you tell a customer it's "maintenance-free," they'll test it. I keep to the manufacturer's official claims, and I expect my team to do the same. For that matter, the FTC has clear guidelines on environmental and performance claims. If you say a product is "recyclable" or "eco-friendly," you need to be able to back that up. In our industry, it's easy to greenwash, but it's not worth the legal headache.
Ignoring support for large islands. The aesthetic is great, but the structural requirement is just like a dimension on a stamped envelope—USPS won't accept a letter with the wrong height, and your countertop won't support itself if you ignore the manufacturer's suggested supports and spans. Measure it, size it, and support it.
Not checking local codes. Some jurisdictions require permits for stone countertop work if it involves structural changes or alterations to plumbing. One phone call to the building department can save you from a violation notice and a frustrated customer.
Skipping final sign-off. Before fabrication begins, have the client or GC sign off on the technical drawing, especially the edge profile and the sink openings. This doesn't make you a bureaucrat—it makes you someone who knows what "approved" means.
I wish I had this checklist before my first Dekton job. It would have saved me $3,000 and several sleepless nights. But now it's our standard process, and it's the reason we don't have surprise rework costs anymore. Use it, tweak it, and share it with your team.
